Living Lands and Waters

Living Lands & Waters is a watershed conservation initiative that conducts workshops, tree plantings, clean-ups, and other key conservation efforts primarily along the Mississippi River. Since the organization was founded in 1998, Living Lands & Waters is an “industrial strength” river cleanup organization based out of East Moline Illinois.

I flew to Memphis Tennessee with a small crew from KEEN Footwear to photograph the community effort put into cleaning up the Mississippi River. Starting in the upper Mississippi and traveling down on the barge, Living Lands and Waters has cleaned nearly three quarters of a million pounds of debris along the river with the help of over 10,000 volunteers.

The variety and quantity of garbage floating downstream is staggering. Anything from bottles, tires, batteries, toys, food packaging, clothes, even discarded signage.
